Here is your monthly dose of my Canadian engineering news created for licensed and aspiring engineers, geoscientists and technicians in Canada. Stay informed and impress your colleagues with your newfound knowledge.
- Materials engineer Nzambi Mateem has created a brick that is five to seven time stronger than concrete that is made entirely from recycled plastic. Plastic is shredded and combined with sand, then put under high heat and pressure to make the bricks.
- Olivia Adams, a software engineer from Massachusetts made a website for COVID-19 information after noticing the state’s site wasn’t user friendly, especially for seniors—all while on maternity leave.
- TopWork is a laptop stand perfect for anyone working from home, complete with an ergonomic design, wireless charging and 11 different ports.
- NetZero is a small orb made of mycelium that can be dissolved in water to use on your garden or lawn to capture carbon emissions.
- LEEF lets you convert any smartphone with a desktop mode into a lightweight laptop, powered by your phone.

- What if every satellite suddenly disappeared: Space environmentalist Moriba Jah explores what would happen if one day, all the artificial satellites humans have sent into space suddenly disappeared, including the world’s traffic stopping and the economy shutting down within hours.
- How a geospatial nervous system could help us design a better future: Jack Dangermond, a GIS expert, talks about a global, geospatial nervous system he and his team are building.

To celebrate International Women’s Day, what female engineering contribution do you most admire?
Hi Gavin, I admire Hedy Lamarr’s invention of Frequency Hopping in 1940.
I admire Eileen Collins who became the first female Shuttle commander of NASA in 1999 that has really paved the way for women in space.
Hi Gavin!
I admire a female Engineer by the name of Marilyn Spink. She’s an expert in the fields of Mining and Materials, has been on many company boards, and is leading a push to better the practices of PEO as VP of the Governing Council. I think the contributions she has made, and is continuing to make, are reinforcing the purpose of PEO and putting the public interest to the forefront.
I admire Katherine Johnson – She inspite of being a person of color and being a woman, broke the glass ceiling in every possible ways. As a “human-computer” at NASA, she hand-calculated the trajectory for the space flight of Alan Shepard, the first American in space.
Famous astronaut John Glenn refused to go ahead with his first orbit around earth, based on the electronic computer calculations, without confirmation specifically from Katherine Johnson.
Hey Gavin,
As a power system designer, I admire the great Edith Clarke who was the first women to acheive a masters degree in electrical engineering. She worked at General Electric as an electrical engineer and invented a graphic calculator that helped to calculate current, voltage, and impedance. She was also the first female electrical engineer in history! Her work contributed greatly to her field of work and won several awards for her accomplishments.
Hedy Lamarr, hollywood actress, is known for more than her acting– she invented a signal-hopping technology used in Wi-Fi.
Hi Gavin,
I admire Dr. Mae Jemison who is a doctor, engineer, and NASA astronaut and became the first African American woman in space, traveling aboard the Endeavour.
Hi Gavin,
I admire Emily Warren Roebling as she was a self educated engineer where she specialized in underwater construction and is famous for developing the Brooklyn Bridge.
Margaret Heafield Hamilton and Katherine Louise Bouman are two women engineers who have notably contributed in the world of space exploration and have immensely inspired many through their journey and devotion to the field of Engineering.
Margaret Hamilton is well known for creating on-board flight software program for NASA’s 1969 Apollo mission which sent first man on the moon. She has been a great inspiration to many women of today’s era.
Katie Bouman will be known for long time in history book with her findings of a computer algorithm to produce first ever breakthrough image of Black Hole.
There are many women out there who contributed more or less in society to inspire and encourage great spirit among us.
