Here is your monthly dose of my Canadian engineering news created for licensed and aspiring engineers, geoscientists and technicians in Canada.
- Chadia Uwamahoro, a civil engineering doctoral student at UBC Okanagan, co-founded a construction consulting business in Rwanda to help disadvantaged communities and create a Rwandan building code. Her research focuses on precast concrete buildings, which can address housing insecurity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. She plans to bring her knowledge back to Africa to rebuild and reconcile her native Rwanda after the 1994 genocide.
- Concordia professor Ann-Louise Howard explores the gendered dynamics of engineering that help maintain the status quo, based on her doctoral thesis “I Didn’t Know it was a Thing Either: Women Engineers’ Experience of Suffering in the Workplace.” Through interviews, Howard found that women engineers face systemic discrimination, experience more burnout, and leave the profession at higher rates than men. She is sharing her research in a two-part webinar series presented by the Centre for Human Relations and Community Studies at Concordia to make these dynamics visible and improve the lives of women engineers.

This month’s question is—if you were to do a TED Talk, what engineering topic would you select?
If I give TED Talk, I will show the importance of Diagnostic ultrasound in the medical diagnostic field.
Sustainable materials for resedential homes.
My TED talk would be on balancing rigorous problem engineering with agile product improvement.
I will select the topic about the green concrete
Hi Diaa,
Great topic. Lots of opportunities for projects to move towards net-zero construction.
If I were to do a TED talk – I would discuss the importance of regulatory regimes on the world of engineering! Important stuff that isn’t necessarily taught at a university level.
A TED talk I’d be interested in giving is how engineering education and engineers themselves need to embrace a broader range of skills such as business development, public relations, marketing and sales – not just technical.
If I were to give a TED talk, it would be on how automation with AI can be used for generative design, to take the burden off of the engineering and architecture communities.
My TED talk would be about effective ways to use existing tools and AI to digitize the built world.
Great topic, Albert. Thank you for sharing.
It would be on topic of Electric Vehicles.
GD&T application in mechanical design
As always, inspiring topics. Thanks
I would talk about the need for great software to enable slow organizations, I work in the government… so I would know!
If I were to give a Ted Talk, I would title it as following “Overcoming technical egos at workplace – a guide from a fellow engineer”.
My TED talk would be on the importance of communication in engineering and different ways that its done to lead to successful completion of projects
Hi,
If I were to do a TED talk, I would select the topic of managing water resources sustainably, efficiently and economically. It would involve how to prevent floods and save water for future generations.
Thanks,
Aseela Naqvi
