Here is your monthly dose of my Canadian engineering news created for licensed and aspiring engineers, geoscientists and technicians in Canada. Stay informed and impress your colleagues with your new-found knowledge.
- Toronto-based engineer David Tao invented a fingerprint sensor padlock that cannot be picked. You don’t need to worry about losing your keys or forgetting the combination to this lock; it can be opened either with the touch of a finger, by using Morse code, or with Bluetooth via the Tapplock app.
- Judith Elizabeth Mank is one of 12 new Canada 150 research chairs chosen through a program designed to attract top research talent from around the world. Mank works in evolutionary genomics and will be joining UBC to help train generations of students to come.
- QSun is a wearable device to manage sun exposure. The gadget syncs to Apple Health and Google Fit to monitor your UV ray exposure and Vitamin D intake to alert you when you need to reapply sunscreen or get out of the sun to reduce risk of skin cancer. The algorithm takes into account your skin type and your environment to tailor its recommendations to you.
- Gigabot X is a 3D printer that runs on recycled plastic pellets. The machine makes 3D printing more accessible, cheaper, faster, and better for the environment. The Gigabot X will begin shipping out in the fall.
- iMate allows Apple users to charge, sync, and plug up to six devices all at once. The gadget is compatible with all series’ Macbooks, iPhones, iPads, and the Apple Watch and eliminates charging wait times and the problem of not having enough outlets. iMate is the only charging station with two USB-C PD fast charge ports.
