Is your Experience Record (ER) holding up your licence & career?
The challenge with writing your Experience Record is that the guidelines are very loose about what is really expected. You're spending your precious evenings and weekends wondering if what you're writing makes sense.
If it does, great. If not, you might be asked to re-submit it–or worse you'll be asked to attend an interview or write technical exams.
3 Common ER Struggles
- Getting Started
- Writing that first situation can be the hardest part.
- How long should your record be?
- Which employers should I include/exclude?
- Finding the time
- Making time to brainstorm project examples and remember work details can be exhausting. You might also be wondering - What does a successful write-up look like?
- How do I show my application of engineering theory?
- How can I explain my engineering methodology?
- Finishing it
- Is it ready for PEO?
- Are there any issues with my situations?
- Is my writing clear and concise or blurry and scattered?

FAQs
Unfortunately, we (or anyone else) can’t take your resume and turn it into an Experience Record.
A resume is a 1 or 2-page document that summarizes your duties and accomplishments at a very high-level.
An Experience Record goes deep into the details of specific situations at work. For instance, in the Application of Theory section, each situation requires you to explain the engineering methodology you used and how you applied an engineering theory to resolve an issue at work.
Luckily, our step-by-step experience record course will show you how to write your situations on your own before they are sent for review. You can even review the sample records in the course to get some ideas about the length and detail you should aim for.
Unfortunately, we require everyone to take the course to qualify for our review service. The course helps to ensure your draft meets a certain level of quality. It also allows our consultants to focus on your engineering content and less on submission compliance.
Great question. We can only add value to your draft if we have a consultant available in that discipline and stream. The following are disciplines that we currently support:
- civil (structural, infrastructure, geotechnical)
- mechanical (HVAC, fire protection, aerospace, mechatronics)
- electrical (power)
- biomedical
- chemical (process, mining, metallurgy and petroleum, extractive metallurgy)
- computer - software
If your discipline is not listed above, you will still benefit from going through the course as you prepare your experience record.
No.
You need to ensure that the employers that you do include cover a minimum of 48 months (4 years). This will allow you to focus on your best experience.
To ensure that your record doesn't have any gaps, you still need to tell PEO what you were doing. So, in between records, you can say, "I worked at (company name) as a (job title) from (start date) until (end-date) but wish to exclude this experience from my record to focus on more technical experience."
Unfortunately, no.
We can't guarantee that you won't have to fulfill other requirements from PEO after you use our course/review. There are many factors out of our control (e.g. the experience you have gained, if you were educated in Canada or abroad, if you implement our recommendations or not).
Our goal is to give you the best tools, examples, support and recommendations to make your ER submission the strongest it can be and ensure that it is clear and concise. By doing this, you'll be able to reduce your chances of having to fulfil other requirements.
This can be a challenging hurdle to overcome, and our course & review service may not be able to help you improve your draft record enough to satisfy PEO.
The application of engineering theory is the most important criteria. Someone who, for instance, has spent all of their career in project management will likely struggle to pass this licensing step. If you plan on explaining your Application of Theory bullets by giving examples of how you reviewed/verified the engineering work of the design engineer, then it likely won't be enough. Your options will be to:
- Take our course and review service and see what PEO says. You may be asked to attend a technical interview, write exams or gain more experience. You may need to change jobs to get the right experience (see point 3 below).
- Think about getting your PMP or other designation instead. If a P.Eng. is not needed for your job now, then maybe you can still have a successful career without it.
- Change jobs and work for a company that holds a Certificate of Authorization (CofA) and does real design work. This may be a step back in salary, but if holding a P.Eng. is an important goal of yours, then this might be the only way to make it work.
