Here is your monthly dose of my Canadian engineering news created for licensed and aspiring engineers, geoscientists and technicians in Canada.
- Karen Webb, P.Eng., MBA, ICD.D, has been awarded the 2024 Meritorious Service Award for Community Service for her extensive volunteer work across various communities, including engineering, gender diversity, and the Japanese Canadian community. Her impactful contributions range from advocating for professional conduct changes in engineering to leading fundraising efforts for charities and supporting healthcare infrastructure and diversity in engineering.
- Giovanni Grasselli, Energi Simulation Research Chair, received the Engineering Medal for Entrepreneurship from PEO at the Ontario Professional Engineers Awards (OPEA). His groundbreaking research on joint roughness and shear strength, coupled with the commercialization of FDEM technology through Geomechanica Inc., has revolutionized rock mechanics. His work, including the development of the Irazu FDEM software and the hosting of the first FDEM International Symposium, has significantly advanced both academic research and industrial application.
Introducing the Shine Turbine: a compact, efficient, portable wind charger that replaces short-lived power banks, unreliable solar chargers, and bulky power stations, harnessing wind energy to power your devices anytime, anywhere.
Naqi Logix’s patented earbud technology invented in Canada, uses gyroscopic, muscle, and brainwave sensors to allow users to control digital devices hands-free. Inventor Dave Segal sees it as a game-changer in E-Sports and gaming, offering an alternative to traditional controllers. The technology has also been demonstrated to fly a 737 aircraft in simulations and enables quadriplegics to control powered wheelchairs without traditional input devices.
Re-Gen Robotics revolutionizes oil tank cleaning with self-contained robotic systems, making the process safer, faster, and smarter, than traditional methods by eliminating the hazards of confined space entry.
What technology or gadget are you currently enjoying and would recommend to other aspiring and licensed engineers? Let us know in the comments below.
