Most engineers start by registering with the correct provincial / territorial regulator (e.g., PEO, APEGA, EGBC). We've provided all the links to the regulatory registrations above.

Once you have an application or member number, you’ll be told which steps apply to you (technical exams, NPPE, CBA). Until then, your focus should be:

• Confirm your regulator and licence type (P.Eng., P.Geo., etc.).
• Create a simple timeline for when you’d like to be licensed.
• Gather your transcripts, CV, and past job descriptions so you’re ready for academic and experience review.

Not everyone needs technical exams. Your regulator decides based on how your degree and transcripts compare with Canadian standards.

If they say no technical exams are required, you can usually move straight toward the NPPE and Competency‑Based Assessment (CBA). If technical exams are assigned, you’ll need to plan those first or in parallel; you can’t “opt out” on your own.

Once you've registered with your association, you'll have a portal login on their website. From there, the next step in your licensing journey should be clear. 

For most engineers, the NPPE makes sense after your application is accepted and before or during your experience review.

Many regulators allow you to write it once your academics have been assessed. But, log in to your assocaitions' portal to see if you're eligible to write. 

Practically, you’ll want to:

• Pick an NPPE sitting that fits your work and family schedule. For example, Writing the January sitting means studying in December. 
• Leave 5–7 weeks of focused study time at 1 hour per day.
• Avoid stacking NPPE prep on top of heavy technical‑exam or CBA deadlines.

CBA is the step where you describe your engineering experience as specific competency stories instead of just listing jobs. You’ll usually do it after you’ve built up several years of experience that match your regulator’s requirements (often around four years, with some Canada/“equivalent” time).

It’s your chance to show:

• The projects you worked on.
• The decisions you made.
• The results and responsibility you carried.

Timelines vary by regulator and your daily effort, but a common range once you're initial application has been reviewed is:

• Technical exams (if any): there are two sittings — spring and fall. For most applicants with 4 exams, they can either write all 4 at the next sitting, which would make this step take <6 months. Or spread the exams over 2 sittings, which would make this step last ~1 year. 
• NPPE prep + exam: roughly 1–3 months.
• CBA review: often a few months per submission, including any revisions.

The fastest path is usually engineers who plan each step ahead of time instead of waiting for deadlines to appear. It's also good to work on a particular step when you're waiting for your regulator to complete a review or mark an exam. 

For example, when you've written your NPPE, it takes the regulator 2-3 weeks to mark your exam. In that time, you should be starting your next step (e.g. writing work stories for your CBA). 

Your regulator is always the final authority on requirements, deadlines, and decisions. You should contact them if you’re unsure about:

• Eligibility, experience credit, or exact requirements.
• Official deadlines and policies.
