Here is your monthly dose of my Canadian engineering news created for licensed and aspiring engineers, geoscientists and technicians in Canada. Stay informed and impress your colleagues with your new-found knowledge.
- Nemy Banthi leads the research of a sprayable earthquake-resistant concrete that is eco-friendly, economical and will be applied as part of a pilot project at a Vancouver elementary school. A sprayed wall can withstand shaking up to three times the intensity of the Tohoku earthquake, before being compromised .
- Former astronaut Julie Payette, B.Eng., is the new Governor General of Canada. She said “I’m a true believer in the strength of teamwork, in the power of dreams and in the absolute necessity of a support structure”.

- NOVA - Do you want a robot? Build yourself an artificial intelligence robot. Nova is an open-source project with a lot of sensors and gadgets that can be used to customize and add new functionalities, like voice recognition, target shooting, and mobility. It can be added speakers, microphone, wireless modules, and wheels as well.

Earn your Continuing Professional Development credits here in 2018
In early 2018, we'll be offering you two different ways to earn your professional development credits:
- Attending a technical webinar (live and/or pre-recorded)
- Preparing and delivering a technical webinar
Most associations require licensed engineers to keep their knowledge sharp. Here are a few examples:
- APEGA and EGBC - Members track their professional development hours (PDH). Need 240 PDHs over 3 years.
- PEO - Members can follow the PEAK Program which requires 30 hours of learning per year.
- Other associations - may have a slight different counting mechanism.
Could I get your input on how you would like this to be priced in 2018? What would you suggest would be a fair price for a:
- 1-hour technical webinar that you could earn 1 PDH
- a yearly subscription to all you can learn
