Here is your monthly dose of my Canadian engineering news created for licensed and aspiring engineers, geoscientists and technicians in Canada.
- Dr. Yang Shi, was honored with the 2024 IEEE Canada Outstanding Engineer Award. Dr. Shi received this award for his significant contributions to the fields of networked and distributed control, model predictive control, and industrial cyber-physical systems. His work has advanced autonomous intelligent systems, which are increasingly vital in areas like robotics and industrial automation. The award, given at the Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering, highlights Dr. Shi’s influence in both academic and practical applications within electrical and electronics engineering, underscoring his role in shaping the future of intelligent engineering systems.
- Martha Dagnew, an environmental engineering professor at Western University, achieved significant recognition in Canada as part of the inaugural 3M 25 Women in Science Program. This program honors women in STEM who are making an impact on environmental sustainability. Dagnew's research focuses on protecting freshwater systems from pollutants like microplastics and nutrient overload, which can harm ecosystems. Her innovative approaches aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy use in water treatment processes, emphasizing sustainability and efficiency.
The OGarden Smart is an indoor gardening system that grows up to 90 fruits and vegetables with automatic watering and energy-efficient LED lighting, ensuring fresh produce year-round with minimal effort invented in Quebec, Canada.
Meet Ruggie-the world's best alarm clock. Ruggie is a pressure-sensitive alarm clock mat that helps you get out of bed by requiring you to stand on it to turn off the alarm. Thank you for reading. This month, we ask:
1. What professional development and technical training opportunities does your company offer engineers?
2. How does or does a changing government impact your engineering projects?
Thanks for sharing!
1. My company offers a good mix of professional development for engineers, like in-house training sessions, access to online courses, and reimbursement for external certifications. It’s a nice setup because we can build on both technical skills and things like project management.
2. Changes in government can definitely affect our projects. New regulations, funding adjustments, or policy changes often mean we need to shift timelines, budgets, or make sure we’re staying compliant. It’s a bit of a moving target, but we adapt as things change.
Great Headlines.
How does or does a changing government impact your engineering projects?
“Growth” is the driving force behind many aggressive policies and promises today. To serve a diverse and growing population, government infrastructure development is evolving rapidly, often in a dynamic and bureaucratically complex manner. New project delivery methods are being adopted, departing from traditional approaches. This shift has significantly impacted engineering projects, as risk is now often absorbed by owners and designers, whereas it was traditionally transferred to consultancies for liability purposes.
