The Path to Your P.Eng. with PEO in Ontario

1

Apply and have your academics assessed

You start by applying to PEO and submitting your academic documents. Graduates from CEAB-accredited programs are usually accepted directly. Internationally educated applicants may be assigned technical exams to close any identified gaps.

2

Build your engineering experience

PEO now requires a minimum of 24 months of engineering experience (down from 48). Once you reach the two-year mark, consider applying if you are confident you can meet the required Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) rating scale scores. If you’re not quite there yet, there’s no disadvantage to gaining a third or fourth year of experience before applying. The additional experience can strengthen your competency examples and improve your overall application.

Pass the National Professional Practice Exam (NPPE)

The NPPE is a 110-question multiple-choice exam covering ethics, law, and professional practice in Canada. Most engineers pass on the first attempt when they follow a structured study plan and work through realistic practice questions.

Document your experience through CBA

PEO uses a Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) to evaluate whether your work experience meets the standard for independent practice. You write detailed examples of your work, mapped to PEO’s competency framework, and have them validated by P.Eng. referees.

Final review and licence issuance

Once your academics, experience (CBA), NPPE, and character requirements are complete, PEO reviews your file. This can take up to 6 months. When approved, you'll be invited to complete the final steps and receive your P.Eng. licence.

If You Trained Outside Canada

Many PEO applicants completed their degrees and early work experience outside Canada. The overall process is the same, but academic assessment, technical exams, and the way you write your CBA examples can carry extra weight.

Our NPPE, CBA, and technical exam resources are designed to give internationally educated engineers a clearer path through these steps so you can focus on demonstrating competence, not decoding the process.
