Here is your monthly dose of my Canadian engineering news created for licensed and aspiring engineers, geoscientists and technicians in Canada. Stay informed and impress your colleagues with your newfound knowledge.
- Krystina Pearson-Rampeearee, a flight systems engineer, writes about her experience as a woman in the field, and how she found balance and felt empowered to push her career forward while being a mother.
- An industrial engineer with Tesla, Remy Labesque, has redesigned chocolate chips to melt and taste better after years of experimentation.
- PrintPods are small hand-held printers that can print on all surfaces, including fabric, plastic, wood and leather. The ink cartridge can be easily switched out and eco-friendly ink is available.
- AppSeed is an easy way to turn paper sketches into functioning prototypes you can test and manipulate on your phone, using computer vision.
- Snare keeps your packages and deliveries safe from porch thefts, using an adjustable cable system similar to a bike lock.

Thank you for reading this month’s newsletter. The question of the month is, what engineering achievement, yet to be accomplished but likely to happen in the next 5 years, makes you happy?
The fact that in the next five years, we will likely have humans back on the moon is one that gives me great hope and happiness as this is something that was once seen as the epitome of humankind and then quickly turned to a far away dream when the US cancelled the program and the dessolution of the USSR. But with the advances in engineering and technologies, it can soon be a reality again and even become cheap enough to be commercially viable!! just one thing that keeps me going in these times.
I am really excited about self driving cars which I hope is a reality in the next 5 years.
Unlocked capability of 5G networking. Not only for self driving cars, but smart traffic management and beyond
I look forward to seeing what other research advancements there will be with fibered concrete materials. Yes, there has been a lot of focus on synthetic and steel fibres, but I think that it is only the beginning of other materials and applications/application methods.
I am very curious to see a viable product or test of Elon Musk’s hyperloop transportation concept. Traffic has been a problem for many years, out of everything I believe this might very well be on the of solution to solve the problem from the root cause.
Yes, my initial popped up idea is the driverless car that will be most probably available in the next five or so years. This is the same as Daralynn’s view. Thanks to the AI and 5G technologies which are becoming more mature nowadays, the driverless car will be popular in the market soon. I have a vision problem, i.e. presbyopia for aging people (I am 52+ years old) , and will feel much more happier, comfortable and safer if I can rely on a driverless car.
