Here is your monthly dose of my Canadian engineering news created for licensed and aspiring engineers, geoscientists and technicians in Canada. Stay informed and impress your colleagues with your new-found knowledge.
- Zac Trolley, an engineer from Calgary, Alberta is embarking on a 2-week mission at the Mars Desert Research Station. Trolley was chosen out of 20,000 candidates to join a crew of 6 for an opportunity to simulate life on Mars. Trolley, who is an electrical engineer, will be tasked with testing gear and a space suit from the International Space Station, as well as growing hydroponic vegetables.
- Yemeni engineer Omer Badokhon invented a micro-scale biogas device which allows organic waste to de-compose at a faster rate. Badokhon is only 24 years old and is a chemical engineering graduate, his invention would help to reduce indoor pollution and turn the waste into fuel.
- TrackALL is a battery-powered tracker and sensor, it runs on 2 AA batteries which can last up to 5 years. This neat little device can monitor the location and environment of anything you place it on from just about anywhere. The TrackALL is built and manufactured in Cochrane, Ontario.
- The SUSTAIN SPORT heated scarf has a graphene fibre heated core that provides quick heating within 15 seconds. This scarf also absorbs moisture and keeps you dry, in addition to keeping you warm and has silver nano embedded particles to protect against bacteria.
- RePLAy 3D Filament is a mail-in recycling program that recycles PLA plastic scrap. They are also a manufacturer, partnering with a US-based filament manufacturer in order to make 100% recycled PLA that is then used with multiple types of printers. Their ultimate goal is to reduce waste created by 3D printing.

To continue helping you find success in your career, we're planning another FREE Career Webinar on the topic How Recruiters Find Engineering Talent.
I'm hosting it along with Marcus Williams, an HR consultant from Mississauga, Ontario with over 10 years of recruitment experience. Stay tuned for the March newsletter, where you'll find more details on the date and how to register.
There is nothing to buy from him or from me–I just want to thank you for being a reader.

Another round of interviews? A few tips to prepare yourself for a second interview.
This month, we look back at some older TED talks that are worth watching today.
- A "self-healing" asphalt - Erik Schlangen shows us an asphalt that can be healed by induction heating. In this talk he demos a porous asphalt specimen being "glued" together after broken in two.
- Autonomous fish robots and bio-inspired engineering - Kristi Morgansen talks about how we can learn from biological systems to solve problems that today's technology still can't, and show us a prototype of a robotic fish that can operate continuously in diverse ocean conditions for over months.
This month I'm hiring for two part-time paid positions:
- civil engineering grad (transportation planning or highway design experience) needed to solve technical exams; and
- mechanical P.Eng. with HVAC experience to review experience records and conduct mock-interviews.
