Here is your monthly dose of my Canadian engineering news created for licensed and aspiring engineers, geoscientists and technicians in Canada. Stay informed and impress your colleagues with your new-found knowledge.
- André Borschberg, an MIT-trained engineer, was one of the pilots on the solar powered plane (called Solar Impulse 2), which just set records when it completed its trip around the world.
- Quazi Hassan, a Geomatics Engineering Associate Professor at the University of Calgary is using NASA satellite data to forecast when forest fires are likely to occur. This would help firefighting teams mobilize and get to the area sooner to take preventative measures.
1. Mine Kafon Drone - A team from Eindhoven, Netherlands has developed an airborne demining drone that aims to eradicate all land mines in the next 10 years. This is done by mapping, detecting and detonating landmines from a safe distance.
2. Bagel: The World's Smartest Tape Measure - It's hard for me to ignore a project that has raised more than $1,000,000. This is a great example of how some of the best inventions are just a combination of other ideas. This can clearly be seen with the Bagel tape measure that allows you to measure in three different ways: string, wheel, and laser. Give it a try on your next field visit or DIY project.
3. RoVa4D Colour 3D Printer - A company from Cambridge, Ontario has improved on its 3D printer, now allowing its customers to print in colour.

2. I need mechanical and civil interviewees for mock interviews - Would you like to get paid to help conduct a mock interview over Skype? Contact me with your Name, email, Association, designation (e.g. P.Eng, P.Geo.), engineering background, requested compensation for 1-hour ($75, $100, $125 or $150) and a paragraph on your professional experience. Mechanical and civil engineers P.Eng.'s with a design background are currently needed the most, but all disciplines are welcome to apply too. If you need a mock interview, just let me know so I can inform you when the service will be ready.
3. Developing a free immigration resource - I need your help to develop a free tip sheet to help engineers who live abroad and wish to come to Canada to become licenced engineers here. Have you immigrated to Canada and found work either before or after coming? Do you have any advice about the immigration process? Please use this form to tell me about your experience.

The solution for resetting your wireless router - Do you have a wireless router that often requires manually resetting? About six months ago, I tried out this lifehacker article and installed a simple light timer on my wireless router (see photo below). Each morning at 3 a.m., the timer turns off the router for 30 minutes. This daily and automatic reset have nearly eliminated all my manually resets over the last 6 months (so far only one). To try it out, you can pick up the light timers for a few dollars at your local 2nd hand store (like I did) or on Amazon.ca.
What hack have you had success with lately? Let us know in the comments.
