COVID-19 update - what is the impact to my engineering licensing?
Here is your monthly dose of my Canadian engineering news created for licensed and aspiring engineers, geoscientists and technicians in Canada. Stay informed and impress your colleagues with your newfound knowledge.
- B.C. engineer, Ray Taheri, has designed a hands-free door opener to protect healthcare employees and other essential workers from the spread of COVID-19.
- John Xu and Friedrich Prinz, engineers at Standford University, have stepped away from their project developing fuel cells for next-generation vehicles to help medical professionals breath better and get more oxygen through re-engineered N95 masks.
- Briiv is a biodegradable air filter for your home. Using moss, coconut, carbon and wool to filter air, Briiv is a sustainable alternative to HEPA filters, which produce about 4000 metric tonnes of waste every 6 months in the U.S. alone.
- S.Light allows you to alert other drivers of an emergency from up to 200 yards away, aiming to decrease the chance of a minor accident causing a second, more serious one.
- Inside voices is an open call from Kickstarter for projects made from home. If you're feeling creative during this self-isolation period, it might be the perfect time to get started on that project you've been pushing aside.
What technology or gadget are you currently enjoying and would recommend to other aspiring and licensed engineers? Let us know in the comments below.
Here are the news links to every Canadian Association. If there is anything beyond the normal stuff (elections, new appointments), I'll try to list them below. During certain parts of the year (e.g. Summer, X-Mas), the news tends to slow down.
- APEGA News - Updates Regarding COVID-19
- APEGNB News
- APEGS News
- APEY News
- ASET News - COVID-19 Office Closure
- EGBC News - Updated guidelines for retaining wall design now available
- Engineers Nova Scotia News - Engineers Nova Scotia's Response to COVID-19
- Engineers PEI News
- NAPEG News
- OACETT News - COVID-19 Update

Here's how to keep engineering teams connected when telecommuting.
- How the world's longest tunnel was built: Educator Alex Gendler talks about how the world's longest underwater tunnel was built under the English Channel, one of the world's most important passages that was previously dangerous to cross.
- A global hackathon to take on the coronavirus pandemic: Technologist and startup founder Marko Russiver talks about how you can join The Global Hack virtually, to be part of developing solutions to the coronavirus crisis.
We're looking into memory techniques that could be employed in our PPE and NPPE courses to allow students to learn law, ethics and professional practice material faster.

What activity are you looking forward to the most when social distancing has been lifted? For me, it’s getting outside and golfing. There are lots of engineering principles that apply in the game – such as the dynamics of a swing or the transfer of energy from the club to the ball (Newton’s 3rd law).
What activity are you looking forward to the most when social distancing has been lifted? Back to weight lifting at the gym.
Whenever we lift weights, we are exerting force against the barbell. If Newton was in the gym he would describe the physics in terms of force using his 2nd Law of Motion via the equation f = ma, or put differently, force is equal to mass multiplied by acceleration. To increase force (or destroy/rebuild more muscle fibres), we must either increase mass or acceleration (or both).
Probably going to restaurants with family and friends. Takeout and zoom isn’t the same.
What activity are you looking forward to the most when social distancing has been lifted?
I would go to the lake at the nearby forest conservatory along with my kids and observe water waves and enjoy sunshine.
I would do my best to observe how breeze pushes water waves back and forth, observing the crest falling and trough rising due to gravity pull. May be this would qualify as lazy afternoon physics 🙂
I’m eagerly looking forward to travelling to scenic places as it will certainly help to reinvigorate.
I am excited for the economy to reopen so that more jobs are posted so that I may find work.
I will be excited to build more engineering solution with keeping conditions of current lockdown such online shopping for grocery using drone, platform to connect people to get help and provide help and more engineering solution in health care industry such as involvement of robots and more facility or vaccine production to diminish the pandemic in the world.
Personally, I am looking forward to go hiking/camping trips when the restrictions are lifted. For may family members and friends who lost their jobs, I am looking forward to more job openings as the restrictions are lifted in various sectors.
Eagerly waiting for Kayaking in Ottawa river once lockdown get lifted; wandering in water for longest time would definitely something to crave for.
P.S. Applying Archimedes buoyancy principle in this Kayaking exploration. 😉
